The whole sports thing in our area is out of control. A lot of coaches definitely have lost sight of what's important. We'll see how much playing time Ian gets on Sat. I haven't seen an ominous email from his coach yet!

I'm wondering if your note to the coach should have been something like this: "Why?" Why change the emphasis to winning NOW? What makes the playoffs different from the rest of the season? How is it that winning suddenly become more important than "maintaining a balance" between winning and learning new skills? Is there some big monetary payoff if the team wins in the playoffs? A lifetime supply of popsicles? Sounds like the coach had some good ideals and intentions when the season started but, once he had a taste of winning, couldn't stay focused on his real role as coach at the little league level. Either way, I'm glad Chase was immune to it and still enjoyed himself at the game. Get that kid a popsicle!

As long as the kid is happy and feels part of the team, it's not so bad. But there are parent-coaches and then school-based coaches who take this attitude and the kids DO start to realize what they're being told. That's when you start to talk about which sports your kid really wants to play - and how my son wound up playing rugby!

Funny wanting to change it now, the team didn't get to the playoffs by allowing "those" kids sit on the bench during the regular season! We received the same type of email from our son's coach. Sad it also occurs across Baltimore Pike...
