Jennifer - I had to actually LOL while reading this piece! Your opinion is certainly shared in my household! Many years ago I studied at Oxford for a summer and, while there, purchased a genuine British copy of Alice, sat on the sunny banks of the River Cherwell near the window where Dodgson's office was, and read, imagining little girls frolicking in the tall grass beneath the trees. It was a blissfully peaceful summer day and I was, of course, childless at the time. Last summer I had the pleasure of taking my 2 daughters to Oxford where I intended to share this pleasant memory with them, while simultaneously instilling a Great Lesson in Literary History. I showed them the window, explained that little Alice actually played here by the river and that Lewis Carroll watched from his window and wrote the story down for her, to which my oldest daughter gave me that raised eyebrows/sneering look that only a teenager can give and responded "Uhh . . . don't you think that's just a TAD on the creepy side?"

Motherhood truly changes the way we look at everything, doesn't it?

Jime - By the way, did you know Mom hated Alice in Wonderland? I have the copy she was given in 1939 by her parents and it's essentially untouched. She always had a good intuition about people and I think she picked up on the "offness" of Lewis Carroll, even as a child.

The pace of the prose is that of the Lonely Doll. At first I thought those were your words, then reread and spotted the quotation marks. Good tie in to Michael, who is still up to his old tricks.
