They do not have the hard-but-flexible plastic that leaves painful divots that many support undergarments do; and they tend to roll less than other "body shapers" I've used (though note I didn't say "don't roll'). My main goal for Spanx is to avoid VPL in some dresses I have, not necessarily "control" (even a whale bone probably wouldn't work for me anyway!) and for that, it does a good job. Ok, I’ll bite.
