Jennifer, the subheads of your post (Plot, Characters, Setting) are wonderfully apt and clever! Thanks for lifting our past book group experiences to a literary (and legendary) level. I do miss the camaraderie.

Can you believe that I'm 52 years old and I have never joined a book group. I think the commitment phobe in me has always been a bit leery. Seems like I've missed out.

Oh Jennifer...this topic really got to me. One of the things I miss most about living in Bermuda is the monthly meeting with you guys and our lively book club debates. Of course, I'm rather sorry now that I moved and missed that Judeo-Christian mud-slinging match you mentioned. It was and is a fine club and I send my best to all of you. Please let me know what you are reading...and think about convening a book club meeting here! That would be GREAT! Seriously...think about it ladies!

Hey Jen
Can't believe the synchronicity. I was searching through my Bookmarks and came upon your Mothers of Brothers so thus the visit.
And today's topic . . . bookgroups . . . where we first met and home of the lovely living room incident. Love your writing and muses.
Do hope to gather soon. xo

You've got to read this article in the NY Times on bookclubs: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/24/weekinreview/24rich.html?scp=2&sq=book%20club&st=cse

Kristen at Motherese also did a recent post on bookclubs - not sure if you caught it: http://mothereseblog.com/2010/02/23/whats-up-with-book-clubs/

I have had such mixed experiences with bookclubs. Anne and I were in a really awesome one in graduate school that I still miss. We collectively picked such great books, and I was introduced to some marvelous authors. Then I joined a bookclub in Albuquerque: not a good experience. I finally left after a few years.
