That is so true! Screens are everywhere, as I've written before. The TV is never off on the gas tanks or the produce displays around here.
One couple we know was so horrified by their children's boob tube habit that they cut the cable...only to have the kids cluster around the computer screen, like cavemen with fire, to watch YouTube and Hulu for hours on end. The parents waved the white flag and re-installed cable.

My husband and I were cracking up because our son came home with a kindergarten project where they were asked questions about their dads. One was "what's your dads favorite show?" T had answered, "We don't have cable." We were thinking that the teacher must have been impressed with how much quality time we must spend together, but the truth is we have just as much screen time. It's just spent on the computer and hooked up to the DVD player. (A myth buster of sorts... t.v.'s not what it used to be. You can get it anywhere, any time, any how.

Have not heard of Stargate Universe but have definitely been meaning to watch Glee. Perfect for a former Music Jock like me.

What a great Civil War myth! Somehow I missed that one too - can just imagine Spencer's delight at that particular story.

Ah yes! I am often told to stop running in the rain as it will not keep me dryer. My boys also love Mythbusters and I do think it is educational, albeit sometimes inappropriate. One of Spencer's favorites, the Civil War era pregnant woman claiming to have been impregnated by a stray bullet passing through a man's privates. Busted!

It took some googling, but i finally found your site again.

We just moved and I am loath to order service (we get exactly zero channels over the air). The family does function better and we enjoy movie night, but we also enjoy the backlog of TIVO. When that runs out I may break out in a cold sweat.

BTW, Modern Family and Glee are well worth watching, but so is the SyFy original series Stargate Universe (careful here because there are a dozen stargate shows and most are silly, but this one rocks). One other caveat, I really enjoyed the first season of Lost then became so frustrated that I stopped watching sometime near the end of the second season.

I love the show too and find their experiments not only entertaining but educational too. In addition I am a firm believer that like any medium there is
good and bad on tv and its up to parents to help guide their kids to the good stuff and away from the crap. Those who proclaim that they have no tv in their house and are proud of it are missing out on a lot of good tv and in my opinion just snobs. Shows like that, Modern Family, Glee, Life and Lost have led to many nights of group watching followed by discussions of what we thought of the episode or subject matter.
To me that is worth a lot more than shutting off the tv for the sake of it.

I'm glad mind are grown and these law/rules are no longer an item. I can watch TV all the live long day! I mean they can..in their own homes. We ran into those Myth Busters one time in Starbucks and they have come to the next county to use an old mine for some of their 'blowing things up' episodes. Since I never watched the show I didn't know the group we ran into while going to coffee was anyone..my husband did..and he said..'hey that was the crew from Mythbusters'..me meh, 'who what? busters?'...tell your boys I will pay attention more if it happens again.

I totally missed National Turn Off the TV week. Sigh. What an opportunity. But we are huge fans of Mythbusters. The kids can watch re runs for hours and it has become one of the favorite Hanukah presents each year -- a DVD of the entire season. Highly recommended!!
