Exactly, Linda. You would have to remember the color of each book's spine! Easy for some, perhaps, but not me.

I could see color-coding books WITHIN the same subject category. Or for novels, within the same author's body of works. Otherwise, how do you find anything?

I read an article years ago about a philanthropic couple who hosted artists in their home for days, weeks, or months. In return the artists would often do something artsy in/to their home. One artist arranged their books by color. That is the only artistic touch I remember and have thought about it often over the years and secretly wanted to try it. Now you have crushed my dream by pointing out the shortcomings, although you have also saved me countless hours of fruitless labor.

Well Emily, I'm pretty sure it's a Type A thing...and definitely not an English major thing. I'm glad you're happy about your color-coded books. Post a photo, and don't tell Dewey or he'll blow a decimal.

In the year and a half we have been blogging, we have never crossed topics -- that is, without talking, we have managed to stay clear of each others subject matters. BUT - along with and inspired by my dear friend Alison, I color coded my books in my office over the winter holiday! I was going to take a picture -- and blog about it but now I dont have to! I love it! It pleases me. And my books werent sorted in any particular way. Ill try to post a pic later this week!

I admit: I have organized SOME of my bookcase by color. The only problem is, each of the shelves isn't an equal in height, so the taller red books don't fit on the top shelves where they belong in their organizing theme and, well...you get my drift. It wasn't really practical. But it was pretty! I hear you on paring down, too. I love taking down the decorations. To compensate, I did paint an accept wall red in my kitchen this weekend.
