That is one heck of a book – love it!! Great commentary. My husband and I were gasping for air during the hot dogs-in-cabbage part. Though I, too, am surprised that you don’t know who Dennis Day was (the boy singer on the Jack Benny Show – come on!! You DO know who Jack Benny was, right?) I love these old cookbooks. I have a Jello Party Foods book from the 40′s which is packed with fun tips like making Spinach Jello the hit at children’s birthday parties. Mmmmm!

I am particularly curious as to what that’s “crusty” would benefit from a few tricks (3rd photo down is cropped most intriguingly!), enabling us to be ever more so clever and carefree!

If you want to know how Mom really cooked – definitely not putting steaks on top of charcoal – get a copy of “Back of the Box Gourmet.” It’s a collection of recipes verbatim from the backs of boxes and cans during the 50s and 60s and contains such classics as Lipton’s Onion Soup Sour Cream Dip, Campbell’s Green Bean Bake, Bisquick’s Impossible Cheeseburger Pie, Tuna Noodle Casserole with crushed potato chip topping and Ritz’s Mock Apple Pie. Just the thought of these dishes brings me right back home. And I’m old enough to have made a good bit of this cookbook. (Just not that “apple” pie.)

Isn’t charcoal a carcinogen? Why would you stick the meat right on the charcoal brickets! yuck. Well, I am not the only one who noticed. Matching cowboy outfits were the rage for little boys in the 50′s. Mothers must of been bored!

What do you mean you never heard of Dennis Day? He was kinda like a Donald O’Connor only not as well known…if you ask who is Donald..I’m coming over there and…have a big glass of beer! Also isn’t it dangerous to be cooking indoors? These folks lived dangerously despite their perfect looking life’s!

What the hell are those steaks doing directly on the coals?! That looks like the camping trip we’re taking tomorrow where we will forget key utensils and have to resort to extra good ways. Come to think of it, I’m packing my button down shirt.
