Tracie, Deputy Deb in a tutu - LOL. Amazing you shared this grim memory of prima ballerinas in New York City. Just the other day I saw the Simpsons episode where Lisa takes up ballet and is shocked to learn all the girls smoke to stay thin. After Lisa starts inhaling second hand smoke to get the same effect, she comes to her senses and decides ballet is a cruel and unnatural discipline and gets everyone, even the ballet master to take up hip hop. Anyway, your description of the performance as "breath taking" has a great double meaning.

Deputy Deb reminds me of our summer trip to NYC a few years ago when, in my daughters' minds, being a ballet dancer at ABT was the highest level of achievement one could aspire to. After watching a breath-taking performance at Lincoln Center we proceded to the stage door area to catch a glimpse of their idols, clutching our pens and programs for autographs and cameras for lasting memories. During our TWO HOUR wait (they were having a b'day celebration for one of the dancers, we were told. We, on the other hand, had nothing better to do than to wait for them to finish) we struck up a conversation with one of the corps dancers, while she sat (still in pointe shoes and tights) on a grungy concrete barrier in the parking lot, chain smoking. Deputy Deb in a tutu, providing a heavy dose of reality to two little girls . . . .

I watched a fireman fling a lit cigarette out his window while driving down a highway lined with dry brush... just goes to show ya!
Good thing those hay bails didn't catch on fire as your holiday events are sounding dangerous for your health!

Jennifer - so funny you should choose this topic today as YESTERDAY I was sitting in Starbucks and watched a women finish sucking on a cigarette in her car, flick it out the window, and come inside. Aha - perfect blog topic. I see smokers dispose of lit cigarettes all the time - just toss them on the ground as if they were biodegradable and the squirrels would eat them. Do they teach that in smoker's school?? That it is ok to throw lit cigarettes on the ground?? I have to wonder. Anyway, we were obviously tethered in our thinking.
