I make the same distinctions among names! Take Elizabeth – an elegant, cultured girl. Libby is cute and lively. Beth is quiet (nowithstanding my friend Beth who is the opposite). Liz plays lacrosse. Lizzie is a mean girl. Liza is a singer. Eliza is gorgeous and mysterious. Needless to say, I am a total believer that names are hugely important.

That’s funny because I always thought Jennifer was a magical name and Caroline sounded like a bit of a stick. ‘Jennifer’ connoted that ideal blonde girl – the one with the perfect straight hair pulled back into an effortless but elegant ponytail (revealing her exquisite straight hairline) which would flip insouciantly as she turned her head to smile. ‘Jenny’ is almost the same except she wears a bandana. THAT’s what’s in a name!

Oh, I think the world would be a much better place if our politicians were allowed to be real people – understanding the realness of what the rest of us experience, and using the real words to describe it.
