Sounds like something from a Dickens novel – corrupt judges, small boys selling nicked nutmeg on the streets of Philadelphia, the public crying for the judges to be sent to the workhouse to pay for their crimes – a sort of twisted Oliver Twist/Bleak House combo.

And who knew about the nutmeg? That’s a new one on me too, Jennifer. In my day we would have gone straight for the vanilla extract .

nutmeg! sounds like it’s still folklore that you can get buzzed from the stuff. This friend of mine remembers buying milshakes at Arby’s where nutmeg was available as a complimentary condiment. She said they’d unscrew the lid and pour the contents into the milkshake, and then gag trying to drink it. Then they’d wait. Like the Emporer’s Clothes, no one would admit they hadn’t gotten high. I don’t remember anyone going to juvie for this transgression.
