I used to work on a university campus. To say that things were tense after each campus "incident" at other colleges would be an understatement. We had emergency drills, too, with one "scenario" being a shooter. It was creepy and I hated every minute of it.

Oh yes, Tracie, we've heard the discussion of co-ed dorms as well! I'm sure you did not imagine the quick glances among the kids - and there must have been some split-second smirks along with them. The fake dorm room we saw had furniture and knick-knacks from Bed Bath & Beyond (the stickers were still on them) along with WEAR CONDOMS posters. If I hear of any support groups, I'll let you know - or maybe we should start one!

Oh Jennifer!! We're at exactly the same station of life, only I'm doing it as a Mother of Sisters. The college visits, the excitement, the shock of it all starting to hit home. We went to look at a school (which shall remain nameless) this summer. Same experience as yours - gorgeous campus, all the right majors, correct size and proximity to the desired fun weekend activities. The first wake-up call came when our guide (a male college student) pointed out the emergency call boxes located conveniently around campus. The second came as he showed us the student dorms and nonchalantly explained that, while the dorms were not "tehnically" co-ed, "overnight visits" (wink, wink!) were allowed - although not for more than 4 consecutive nights. At which point all the prospective freshmen students glanced at each other for a micro-second (or did I only imagine this?) and all the prospective freshmens' parents donned noticeably stunned expressions. Now . . . not that I didn't go to a co-ed college myself in the 70's, but this is MY CHILD this guy was talking about, for goodness sake!! Oh - this is going to be hard! Do you know any support groups for first-time parents of college students??
