I admire you, Em, and other bloggers, for putting yourselves out there and opening yourselves up to comments from anyone and everyone. Keep on keeping on! And of course, writing. :)

Sigh. I feel you on this, Em. I still appreciate how you supported me through my first "hater" experience at MOB which I must say still haunts me at times. Since I have started writing, I really try (although it is not really my set-point) to stay objective and not take things TOO personally. Like you said, if someone has a valid point and says it in a adult-like tone, I feel that warrants my response as the writer who put the topic out there in the first place. But you are spot-on that some people are always looking for a target - and you know in your gut when you read a response who is ready to rumble. I agree, so not worth it. And while I may concoct a million snarky or sniveling responses in my head, I always feel better for taking the high road. Which again, you taught me to do, thank you again my friend!! And for some comic relief, go watch Jimmy Kimmel's Celebrities Read Mean Tweets. xoxox

I think you were right NOT to respond, Emily. I feel like this is a perfect example of one of the downsides of social media: people feel comfortable "saying" things to you via these mediums that they would think twice about uttering out loud in person. At least, that is my sense. xo

Ah, I'm right there with you. Any negative feedback (which I open myself up for when I assume everyone gets my "humor") makes me question whether I should ever blog again. I have to confess that I'm not nearly as envious of your Huffington Post appearances now!

Yes, haters will hate and everyone else has probably stopped paying attention to them, so they focus on something you've written....I guess not listening might get them to stop, but who knows. They are probably just hoping you'll engage and they can escalate.

Saw this (after the viral post she had) reminds me of your situation a little

Beautifully stated, Em. For what it's worth, I share your impulse to make things better whenever possible, but am trying to accept that there are times it's best just to let go. I think that's what 45 (er, 46) looks like for me. ; )
