Doug and I volunteered for Math night a few years ago. The event had ended, it was late and we were cleanng up. I was standing near the custodian, "Miss Diane," when her cell phone rang. I could hear the voice on the other line: "Hi Diane, this is Ellen. I'm upstairs getting ready to leave but I wanted to make sure that everything was okay and that you didn't need anything from me. . . ." Miss Diane assured her that everything was fine and it was okay for her to leave. As she hung up the phone, she looked at me and smiled. She said that she loved her job. She said "not many people have a boss who would think to call like that." She knew that she mattered. And that makes all the difference.
