Sorry to be weighing in so late to the conversation, but I have to add my two cents. Doug and I volunteered for Math night a few years ago. The event had ended, it was late and we were cleanng up. I was standing near the custodian, "Miss Diane," when her cell phone rang. I could hear the voice on the other line: "Hi Diane, this is Ellen. I'm upstairs getting ready to leave but I wanted to make sure that everything was okay and that you didn't need anything from me. . . ." Miss Diane assured her that everything was fine and it was okay for her to leave. As she hung up the phone, she looked at me and smiled. She said that she loved her job. She said "not many people have a boss who would think to call like that." She knew that she mattered. And that makes all the difference.

Emily,
Thanks for your wonderful tribute to Ellen. I feel truly blessed that my 4 children (the youngest just graduated from high school last week) all had Ellen in their lives. Each one of them has stories about something special she did for them. She will be sorely missed.
Lyn
PS- I'm so happy I finally found your blog:)

Wow....perfect description of the way Ellen "principals" (if that is a verb!)

Ellen's ability to know and remember every student's name is remarkable...and her genuine interest in each child is unmatched.

She actually got on her hands and knees to look for a plastic spider earring with my daughter who was in tears about her loss....Ellen, who always looks like a million bucks!

I am very thankful that my children had the great fortune to be at WES while Ellen was in charge!

Emily ~ what a beautiful tribute to an amazing person, principal, friend...& as happy as I am for Ellen & her next adventure, I can't help but feel a little sad for us. But, while we lose our principal, the world gains Ellen. I guess I'm ok with that:)
