We have been married for over 20 years now and haven’t gotten each other gifts for each other in years. With four kids and a house that needs constant upkeep the extra money always seems to go somewhere else each year. We also stopped buying each other Xmas gifts too as it was getting to the point we both were getting each other things we didn’t really need or want. Now we save the money for a big expense that we can both enjoy. For instance we just bought a Subaru Outback to replace her 10 year old sexy Honda Odyssey!

A nice quiet dinner out by ourselves somewhere nice is always the best present we give ourselves and we make a point to do that once a month.

My husband is not all that into gifts, which I find very relieving. We’re definitely of the “intrepid” variety. I say this as though I have a ton of experience in the matter–this year will be our 2nd anniversary. But we’re 2 for 2 on “weekend getaways” instead of presents. We do something we want to do anyway, but we have an excuse.

We have been Lame-O’s for the bulk of our years of wedded bliss (25). I think we started off as Gift Givers, but found it to be too much pressure on each other, progressed to Practicals, briefly flirted with Intrepids and are very comfortable in our current state of Lame-O ness.

I love this. Half the time we seem to forget our anniversary. This year (5 year) we mutually agreed to buy a mantel clock … and bonus, our friends got married on our anniversary so we actually got to go out! I tell my husband that he is my present.

I love the idea of low expectations as a gift to ourselves. We swing between “practical” (which, let’s face it, is a total excuse to do something that needed doing anyway) and “lame-o” (that would be this year, our 15th, with not even a card from either side this year–whoops). I’m not sure we’ll ever feel enough like grownups to join the other two categories. Not an attractive personality trait, I realize, but there it is.
