About a year ago, I started meeting my brother for lunch near his office once a month. My newly "retired" status allowed me the time to do so in a way I hadn't been able to before. We live 15 minutes away from each other, but rarely see one another in between the Jewish holidays. It made me angry. It made me sad. And so I decided to do something about it. I love my monthly lunches with him, and look forward to them. We have a conversation not interrupted by kids, not listened in on by spouses, not managed by parents. It's awesome. I highly recommend it, and am really proud of you for tearing up the card.

My brother passed away in 1979. We were not on great terms. How I wish I could go back and fix that. Go for it with your brother. You are lucky to have him.

nice post! I am very close to my brother-always have been-maybe it's because we are so close in age-most of the time he tells me what's going on LOL-I wish he lived closer but we do make it a point to speak at least every couple of days and Skype when we can. We had the same friends growing up and still do. I wish I could take him lunch on his bray-maybe one day!

Nice, Em. As the sister of two brothers and no sisters, I don't really have a sense of how those relationships are different. But I think that it's always a challenge to renegotiate an adult relationship with the guy (or girl) who dared you to eat a Chinese hot pepper when you were 7, or was such a brat that he regularly brought you to tears of frustration. I think your sisterly powers are up to the challenge, and I applaud you for taking it up. And yes, sorry, your brother is a TOTAL hottie.
