Emily, I am the Reynolds' long lost friend, Rob. See Jennifer's post from August 25, 2008. I live in Austria now (short assignment) where they don't have Halloween as you describe it. Teens have some parties, but the children in my village were kinda lost. They must have gotten all the ideas from American movies--they were out in some homemade costumes trying to figure out whaat to do--but no one else was in on the spiel, so they went around to the few small stores asking for candy. And got none. I finally bought some stuff for them. A big (and terrifying) holiday comes up soon, Krampus. People put on costumes like your boys have--only scarier--and whip you around the legs if you aren't quick enough to escape them. Thank you for the work on this blog. I read it every week, to keep up with the Reynolds, but read all your posts too. Promise. Should I buy something?

Jolly Ranchers are very popular in this New England neighborhood! As for the lowly dum-dum, I don't know how it has survived! I can't find a Clark bar anywhere, so I have to assume they are extinct, but the Butterfinger is a good substitute. And in New England we're fond of the Necco (New England Confectionery Company) wafer. I've heard the rest of the country supports Necco only in February, for Necco is the originator of the conversation heart.
