It’s interesting how some kids can just pull off being funny while others try and fail. Ian is a natural (“that’s what she said”), but when Abby tries to be a wise ass/funny, it just comes across as rude and disrespectful. I guess it’s all in the delivery.

Lucky for me, Ian hasn’t ventured into this new territory with his humor…yet.

Yes, things have changed radically. In the old days boys would never have made such remarks with their moms around. Upside – we’re a much less repressed culture. Downside – ditto.

Thank you for walking these paths a few years in front of me so I can learn from and with you. We are doing some of that now (with much less “adult” humor) and I struggle too–my son really wants to be funny, but often only cracks himself up. And helping him find true humor is a rocky shoal. I think you are hitting it right–teaching him what’s funny and what’s cringeworthy–I’d rather learn that at home.
And now that you used it–you’ll have to see if he ever says it again!
