Lindsay - thanks for bringing up the town in Missouri spelled Versailles, as in France. It is pronounced Ver-Sales. And personally I think it's great that you are a Tender Mercies, Peanuts, and reality-show hater.

Skellie, I have to correct myself, Annie Lamott (not your neighbor) has dreadlocks, not cornrows. My bad. Maybe she's changed hairstyles - I no longer track her. Yes, the Brits say "Jew-wan" instead of Juan. What the..?

And LA, you make a good case for cooked sushi. I'll have the California roll, please. One of my Facebook friends started a big discussion today when he came out of the closet and said he hates sushi. "Even cavemen knew enough to cook their food - that's why they invented fire." I couldn't agree more!

My next door neighbor from my childhood was a woman named Anne LaMotte. I'm having a laugh picturing her in corn rows! Sort of like Jane Hathaway from the Beverly Hillbillies in cornrows! Right, the Brits won't use "foreign" words, or proper names, don't they pronounce Don Juan as don jew-ann, and even say jose (instead of Hosay)?

I grew up in Nevada and agree with Jennifer, should be pronounced like the locals-ask about Versailles, Missouri. Annie Lamott from Marin County and have heard her speak locally more than once. The black church actually in Marin City, not Oakland. Agree, I can only take her in small doses and wanted to shoot myself or her after Tender Mercies. My dislikes that apparently make me un-American, I hate Snoopy and the whole Peanuts gang and I do not get reality TV!

And Colorado. We Midwestern and Western Americans say the "a" in Nevada and Colorado like the a in advertising. Easterners always give away their tenderfoot status by saying the Spanish a, which technically is correct, but colloquially, it's not. AAAARGGHHH, why did you have to bring this up, Ed?

"Another blot on her copybook" -- What a great expression! But I wonder if it's considered a weary old expression in England that has become people's pet peeve over there? That leads to an interesting thought -- maybe if we borrowed the quaint word uses from other English-speaking countries, and they borrowed ours, and updated them every few years, no one would use dreary language! If you get my drift, can wrap your head around it and are down with that.

Oh and yes, definitely, you are pronouncing regatta correctly.

Thank you to my Italian-American dear friend Linda, for correcting me on Capri. When in Rome...
Larousse, on the contrary, I love Aussie-speak. And generally, I love English accents. My quibble was with the UK's apparently deliberate mis-pronunciation of "foreign" words which can be read as xenophoboic. While it's certainly true American accents are nothing if not harsh, this is not true when we pronounce "regatta," rhyming the "gat" with "cot." Again I will defer to Linda, but the word is from the Italian and the pronunciation guide here seems to back me up:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/regatta
Pen, where do I begin with Annie Lamott? There were some lines from Operating Instructions that I loved (you gave it to me!) but OMG, the self-indulgence in that book, and Annie's subsequent tomes, is just truly overwhelming. Liz's example is very telling. Another reason (repeating myself here): I don't like her Chinese menu theology. Ed makes a good point: maybe I should read some of her essays on Salon. Small doses may be the way to go with Annie Lamott.
I did not remember that you had left her a voicemail! And she didn't call you back?! Harrumph. Another blot on her copybook (and here I'm quoting your English granny!).

Well I've never heard of Ms Lamott, that's an easy one! I agree with you on sushi, I can't understand why they are so popular. They look weird and unappetizing! I'm another one who prefers cooked fish. I don't mind coffee, although I always think its taste is disappointing compared to its aroma, and will usually have tea if I have the choice.
However I have an "issue" with your opinion of the BBC's pronunciation. On the BBC website (via the Magazine section I think) they have a page of pronunciation tips. I can't imagine how ELSE you would pronounce regatta, other than the "gat" rhyming with "cat"??
You say tomato... potato... ;)

Oh I am raging here about the young folk of today who won't pull their dang pants up!!! I do NOT want to see anyone's underwear! At all!
Also, noisy chewers make me want to clamp my hand over their mouths and nose, and hold on tight till the airlock takes effect.
You would, however, hate the way I speak. I not only have an ocker Aussie drawl (although I am the one speaking correctly, it's you who doesn't), but have probably more in common with BBC style pronunciation than your style. Um... sorry... we all think you say it wrong! :)
