MG, yes, I loved that little PO and the real, 3 dimensional, wood-and-metal-and-glass mailboxes. Which are now almost completely obsolete. Plus, the library had a CARD CATALOG!
Carohope, I would assume it was your younger son who received that fabulous letter advising him to do nothing for some of each day. What a completely refreshing - almost shocking - piece of advice in this day and age.

My son got the best ever "back to school" letter from his teacher this summer. In it she describes how she is spending time on an island (off of Maine) doing nothing. I mean, NOTHING. Sitting in a chair with a book in her lap. And she says something really HAPPENS in that space of nothingness and boredom to get them ready for the next year. And she tells them that for their 1st day assignment, they have to do NOTHING for at least several hours one day, so they can come in prepared to talk about what it felt like to do nothing. It was so different from the "you have to read these two books assignment" of my other son. I loved it. When I was walking around Thousand Island Park, I saw many people sitting in chairs on their porches with books in their laps, not reading, just resting and doing nothing. I can tell you too that on my visit to the Thousand Islands I played Rummikub for hours, and relearned Euchre which I hadn't played for years, and it did something for me that nothing else could have done. Now that I'm back home and being busy again I try to remember that.

Beautiful photos! On my visit there this summer I arrived at T.I. Park on boat and strolled around for an hour and felt like I was moving slow motion or something. Like the way time moved had shifted. Its great to be reminded of how wacked out our sense of time here has become.
