You're right, Leslie, it is the job of a teenager to be ditzy. Or as my mom used to say, "knotheaded." But then you have an adult like President George Bush who says to the pontiff, "Awesome speech, pope." What's HIS excuse?

Yes, this is all true. Annoying is a poor choice of word to cover all negative occurrences. OTOH, when, throughout the course of recorded history, has a teenager ever uttered a quotable sentence? Unless quoted to be ridiculed? It is their function! Perhaps, as she gets older, this teen will prove to be less.....annoying.

Single Writer: I know you always want the big picture, and I'm happy that you want more words, not fewer, but this is a blog, not The Atlantic. Therefore, short and snappy must rule the day. I took the position that our children's vocabularies have suffered as a result of the PC regimes of today's educational trends. Emily sent me this link, which neatly ties together my points as well as yours. And some others.

The commentator's best side is not brought to mind when she locks on a target and misses the wider field.
Lament that teachers, parents, and other senior wordsmiths do not implore their peeping students to use a muscular more descriptive vocabulary. Regret that the witless Nazi witness may watch too much television (with the requisite play of violent desensitizing video games), camped in line for "Twilight" tickets, or does not read the LA Times. And despair for our country's future in international diplomacy and, more parochially, across the back fence if we grow adults who speak and write without nuance or coloratura.
Mothers don't let your brothers grow up to speak with a prosaic tongue.
At 600,000 words our language has underused octaves words that soothe or alarm, praise and demean, and love and hate.
If the Valley Girl's classmates are starting a new Reich, then their Facebook profiles are enough to alarm us to their pledged mission of demeaning and hate. Round them and their parents up. The re-indoctrination should start immediately.
Nazi emulators aren't annoying. They are Evil.

Its Thanksgiving! All of the former words - soothe, praise, love - will see you through the potentially annoying aspects of the weekend-overeating, contentious relatives, and forgetting the meaning of the Day. Applying those words will help you to a better place in life.
Give Thanks that most of the world has changed from enabling to despising and fighting against single-race societies. Give Thanks for our Democracy that has observed the peaceful change of President of the United States for 221 years. And give Thanks that our Democracy believes in proliferating rights, despite the mewling vocabulary of a SoCal teenage girl.
