I'm with you. I definitely measure time by the ending of each summer. And they seem to go by more quickly with each passing year. Great. I'm depressed again...

I love this post, which really boils down to the impermanence of life. How we struggle to hold onto the precious moments, simultaneously aware that they are slipping by. Autumn always brings on the same feelings of melancholy for me, too. You should read Dani Shapiro's "Devotion" and Katrina Kenison's "The Gift of an Ordinary Day." I think both might speak to you right now.

Hey Emily about using Time wisely, check out my comment for Aug. 18th! Why is it that the only time we really stop to smell the flowers is when we are on vacation! I think that is why I love making my house "homey." When you can't sit on an island and enjoy doing nothing, you can make your house a little island apart from the world. It must be really hard when you work at home (aside from always working at home in terms of housework). You can't create a separation that way. Despite all the benefits, maybe that is one of the downsides of those of you who work out of your home.

Autumn is hardest for me, too. Let us bemoan the passing of time with glasses of pino grigio and a refusal to rake leaves.
