For the record MoB readers, the comments above come from two of my closest Wharton friends shown in the picture --far left and far right. The other friend next to me is a successful entrepreneur in Beverly Hills. And I must say that we have all taken very different, but very interesting career paths. Most importantly, we are still close friends which matters more than any of it. Love you guys!

My career on wall street has been extremely fulfilling and sucessful . I got to spend 8 great years in London and travel many places . Indeed , I learned very early on , like 6months out of school, that an 80 hour a week investment banking job , was not for me. I decided I was better suited for a more action packed job in fixed income sales & trading . I found it quite exciting to be on a trading floor with lots of really smart people and looking at 5 different screens at once. I knew the treasury market would always be around and that corporates, mortgage servicers , insurance companies & pension funds would always have to hedge their duration exposure . One could say it was one of the more stable careers in banking that also allowed for a decent work/life balance. It is no surprise that many of the job shares that exist for women on wall street are in sales and trading. You never work weekends and it is rare that one ever has to stay past 6pm . Indeed, the day itself is intense and you start early (7am) but at least my evenings are my own. After nearly 20 years on a trading floor I am still excited about my business and feel blessed that I have found something that has given me so much fulfillment.

As a fellow grad of Wharton back in 1990 I remember the drive to get the high profile job, believing your entire future hung in the balance. Thankfully, with the passing of time and the loss of hair I am learning put my career in better perspective, striving to strike a balance in my life.

While the long term ramifications of the current financial crisis are almost impossible to comprehend at this time, the small silver lining is that hundres/thousands of recent graduates working 80+ hours and draining their lives for the hope of mega-fortunes may get a jump start on finding balance.
