I actually think our brains, tired as they might be, are doing subtle calculations that are constantly changing to include new variables and probabilities...For instance, part of Emily's brain knew that before a magnifying glass fire could actually catch, she would be moving the fully-stirred cheese pot off the burner and swiftly walking outdoors to check on the boys.
