Oh the stories I could tell! But I’ll leave it at this — everybody’s got good ideas here about how to stay independent as we age. Still, we should expect our sons to be involved in our (and our husband’s) lives on a reasonably regular basis — even if it’s in a “quality control” capacity (ie, making sure the caregivers we do have are doing right by us). This isn’t about guilting them into it; this is about human compassion, and daughters/nieces shouldn’t have to do it all.

This is why I tell my sister-in-law who is a mother of brothers to be very nice to my daughter!!! And why I hope for a daughter-in-law who likes me…

You’ll never wear “granny” pants you’re much too stylish so no fear! I must admit when it comes to MY son, there is unconditional love and tremendous pride in the wonderful person he has become and thankfully for him it doesn’t depend upon phone calls!!

I can’t imagine wanting my adult children male or female to help me with underwear shopping, personal hygiene or the even less desirable tasks that go with aging. I bought long term health care insurance for this reason and hope I have set aside enought money to pay people unrelated to me to help with such tasks. I will be happy if my sons pick up the phone when I call them.

The internet will deliver granny panties, never fear. And friends can go with you (note to self: cultivate younger friends).

But you are right about the boys and the calling (in general); an older friend with five kids, four of them girls, speaks to all the girls at least once a week, and many of them once a day. But if she hears her son say hello on the phone, her immediate response is, “What’s wrong?”
