Well “Rocky!” or ignorance at all from someone about where you live is better than what I usually get. When telling someone I live in Buffalo NY, the reaction is downright pity. Oh…. Hard winters… How many Superbowls, Stanley Cups etc etc have you lost? or Why BUFFALO?

They say: “home is where the heart is”. I’ve come to learn that home is where you are. 10 years ago we moved from a care-free life on the lake to our farm where days and nights revolve around weather, temperature and which, if any, blankets the horses need to be wearing. Little time for much else and we will not give our boring life up freely.

True, I did pass on a job in Minneapolis! It could be SOOO much worse than Philly, plus you are close to everything including wonderful beaches. Plus, your godson, Liam loves Philly, Rose Valley and especially the Reynolds family wherever you are living!

We lived in CA with mud slides, wildfires, riots and earthquakes, we moved Asia with its typhoons, volcanoes and tsunamis, then to Africa (don’t get me started on the threats) and then to hurricane land. Now we live in Colorado and the only threats are blizzards, bears and meth heads. Somehow it seems peaceful.

Jennifer, I’m ashamed to tell you that people STILL think you need a passport to go to NM! There are stories about people getting pulled over in other states and being asked to produce a “non-international driver’s license.” There’s a lot of bookstore in town that sell New Mexican passports – they’re pretty funny!

I know exactly what you mean about the NM thing. When I told college friends I was going to work in New Mexico over the summer, some actually asked if I had a passport. Makes you despair about the intelligence of American college students…of course, this was long ago.

I’ve gotta get on the ball and make my Haiti donation, too. I have a friend from Haiti, and he reports that, miraculously, everyone in his immediately family is alive and well.

I also hear you on zip code envy. In the US, when I tell people I’m from New Mexico, they ask me how Phoenix is (“Uh, I don’t know, I don’t live there.”). Or what it’s like when it’s 120 degrees in the summer (“Um, I don’t know, it’s Arizona that gets that hot, not New Mexico.”). When we travel internationally, everyone invariably think we’re from MEXICO, and comments on how excellent our English is. So while New Mexico is somewhat exciting, it’s also terribly confusing.
