And it wasn’t even that long ago in history that records were supplanted by tapes, then DVDs, then iTunes. My kids are amazed that we used to have to buy a multi-song vehicle of any sort, which always contained songs we didn’t like. I hope you have a few records in storage that Ella can take for show-n-tell some day.

You know, I met my husband while I was at a corporate picnic with someone else who was my (then)fiancee. We were both working for a Record Store chain. Thus we are dated both figuratively and literally….
“What is a record, mommy?” little Ella asks, and I wax (no pun intended) nostalgiac on the smell that you would get upon opening the new vinyl package…

Oh Jennifer – how you make me yearn for a similarly wonderful story to tell my kids about how I went off to the Big City to seek fame and fortune, only to find happiness in Tallahassee! Does Miami count? Thanks for the story – I always love hearing how people ended up living where they do. By the way, I remember my former husband’s first just-out-of-law-school salary. It was $12K/year (including a bonus), as he always said, “whether we need it or not.”

Great post! I moved to New Hampshire 25 years ago after being out of college for two years and living at my parents’ house. Oh, I had lots of opportunity to move to NYC to try my hand, like all my college friends, in the big city magazine world. But, I chose a tiny little state, that has become home sweet home.

Jennifer,! I remember my first salary figure too. It was $10.5K. Starting in advertising media planning I was wined and dined (at lunch) by reps from all the media. Good thing, I couldn’t afford to buy any other food. After a disorienting day of splendor, I’d return to my hovel. Actually, it was a favorite time in my life. But, why did all the cute male co-workers always want the gals who already had boyfriends? Same thing in college. Such is life.
