On Christmas Eve, my sons made cookies, my brother Jim made apple pie, and my dad made two pumpkin pies.  They even make the crust from scratch.  Chris and Ian, who are also frequently found in the kitchen, were off doing something else.

For a week, I am truly outnumbered in this house by a factor of 6:1.   I’m a mother of brothers and a mother with brothers and a mother who is lucky enough to still have a father.  Most of my friends have a mom but lost their dads years ago.

So while I raise a glass here in my patriarchal society on Christmas, I wish you a lovely day with the ones you love, regardless of their gender.  Life is sweet, especially when baking has been going on.
