Emily, wonderful post. Love the pictures. I always get a kick out of the “clean process” when I do it on a desk versus others so boy do i relate! And the cleaning lady syndrome…for sure that is what we do too..i feel so fortunate to afford a cleaning person though…as i remember the college days when i was scrubbing toilets!
I am so glad to see that this is a common event in other peoples homes. Mike use to think I was nuts as I crazily strained and cleaned the house the night before the cleaning guys arrived, like you Em, erasing all evidence that we were sloppy in our day to day lives. And as much as he hated the ritual of putting away 2 weeks of clean underwear and socks (from the last time the cleaning guys were here) he loved the end result the following day, a straightened, sparkling, great smelling house.
Anyway Em, congratulations on your new venture, I look forward to reading very regularly and as I said to you before I just love your honest, funny style of writing. XOX
Oh my, so true! Emily, I’m really enjoying your new site. The post about your son’s broken arm had us laughing out loud over here. Keep writing!

Emily, as usual your writing cracks me up! I totally relate to this event as it happens every other Friday in my household. Even though I’m the one who iniaties the drill sergeant command “Martha is coming tomorrow” and initiates the cleaning frenzy, I will say your brother participates willingly. He must have been “trained” at a young age.
I love the before and after pictures!(Considering stealing this idea to properly demonstrate what “cleaning up after dinner” looks like to certain members of my household.)
Keep up the great work, I love reading your work and truly enjoy the good laugh I get every time!
As someone who knows both of you, especially Dave- hilarious! This reminds me of when I was 18 and the day my mother came back from Holland after a month away. I cleaned the house from top to bottom and the first thing she said when she walked through the front door was “Woo I gotta clean.” Your site is awesome!

As always, I am entertained by your smart writing. I particularly like your “straightening success” formula. Your insights into day to day family life are a lot of fun. Sorry I have waited until now to send my congratulations on your great new venture. I have been reading all along and I will continue to do so. Good luck and lots of success.
Great article! Lee also thinks I’m crazy for cleaning for the cleaning people.
Ha! Cleaning. Wonderful post which leads me to another topic: Killer laundry. I can’t seem to find my way out of the mounds and mounds of laundry. Just when I do one load, another three pile up. When I finally catch up, I have baskets of clothes sitting around and no time to put things away. My son thinks its fun to throw clothes in the air and sit in the laundry basket (or “float in the boat”).
How do I cope? Stuff everything in the spare room? Run around naked? How do you cope?
Be sure and show this to Evie. Chuckles galore when I read it – maybe because I identify so much!
Keep it coming

Ah….this sounds so frightenly familiar. Unlike Dave however, my husband will clean toilets, he just won’t shop for food. I think that’s his way so justifying the hours spent with reading material in the bathroom each week!

Evie should definitley see this one…soooooooooo true!!! I love how you put it all together. Maybe there is a new “job” out there for those who really like to “straighten” and can actually do it. My question is…where do we all put all the stuff that we “straighten”. I can’t tell you the number of items I have “lost” do to my own inability to “straighten” well. My definition is to just throw “it” all in a drawer or closet!!! Love your topics!!! xo Jul
